About my books

The Dead Still Cry Out the story of a combat cameraman
Published 2018
This image is taken from Mike Lewis's Visual War Diary. It was taken after the remaining paratroops, about 2,000 of the 10,000 dropped at Arnhem, were withdrawn. This terrible defeat became known as 'A Bridge Too Far' after a book and film of the same name.
This Visual War Diary was the starting point for my research into the British Army Film and Photographic Unit, and my father's role as a paratrooper and cameraman. The research and writing probably took me five years, with trips to the Australian War Memorial, the Imperial War Museum London, the Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces Museum Duxford, the Airborne Museum Hartenstein and the Gedenkenstatte Bergen-Belsen. I also completed a PhD titled Constant Witness Reframing Images of the Second World War, which formed the basis for this book.
The Tale of the Singleton Pup
Published 2022
This image was taken on the 4 January 2020 outside our evacuation centre at the Tura Beach Country Club. The map on shows how close the fire came, the binoculars being our property.
Staff and volunteers at the Country Club made us and other pet owners welcome. They fed us, provided bedding and showers, bought in medication for those that needed it (including pets) and generally looked after us for three days until it was safe to go home.
Bella, a rescue pup from Singleton was just 8 weeks old. We brought her home just five days before we had to evacuate. Her resilience, calmness and good nature in the face of this and three more evacuations inspired this book.
